About Us

Gretchen Hazen Powers, LICSW is a clinical social worker with more than 25 years of experience working with teens and young adults in a variety of settings from hospitals, clinics and schools to private practice.  What she has learned from all of the teens she has been grateful to get to know is how hard they are on themselves and how much they are suffering as a result.  Though they have been taught how to be kind to others they have not been taught how to be kind to themselves.  When she was introduced to Mindful Self Compassion (MSC) in 2010 she knew this was something that would have been so helpful during her own adolescence and pledged to herself that she would bring it to teens as soon as she could.  Fortunately MSC is now available to teens and young adults  through the creation of the MFY program in 2016.
Gretchen was trained to teach the MFY program by Lorraine Hobbs, M.A., one of the co-creators of the program and the Director of Family Programs at the UCSD San Diego Center for Mindfulness and Marta Alonso Maynar, Ph.D. a psychologist and specialist in clinical psychology with the Ministry of Education and Science in Spain.  Big thanks go out to these skilled and wonderful instructors for their thoughtful teaching and passion for working with teens.

"At long last, a self-compassion training for teens! This delightful, innovative program captures the essence of self-compassion for an age group that needs it the most. Wholeheartedly recommended!”— Christopher Germer, PhD (developer with Kristin Neff of MSC,  an empirically-supported 8-week course designed to cultivate the skill of self-compassion)
